Edale Youth Hostel

The Y.H.A. brief was to upgrade its hostel at Edale in the Peak Park. To be carried out over a series of phases, the first phase was the demolition of the existing work study room and a £640,000 extension to provide facilities for the disabled, including new ramp access, 5 rooms for disabled guests, 4 en-suite rooms and one with separate facilities, a new work study room and 2 further 4 bed en-suite rooms.

The work study room provides a multi activity space for use of the hostel guests (including a compass for those who may get lost) as well as providing an area for outside companies to use as conference facilities.

Keswick Youth Hostel

The Y.H.A. brief for this popular Lake District Hostel was for a major upgrade of the property, the existing hostel kitchen was no longer fit for purpose, and there were insufficient toilet and showers. The scheme provided a new state of the art kitchen and modern dining room, with a new reception area at ground floor level, along with additional office space for the hostel management at ground floor level. A new quite room was a necessity and this was provided from an old bedroom at first floor level, though the total number of beds was not reduced due to being able to improve on the existing layouts in other areas

Borrowdale Youth Hostel

The Y.H.A. brief was to provide the hostel with 2 disabled letting rooms, improved access for disabled clients. The provision of a work study room for use by school groups and to improve staff facilities, the staff house replaced a former timber framed building which was constructed at the time of the original timber hostel. Set to the rear of the hostel it provides accommodation for 8 members of staff, constructed in Lakeland stone and render with Lakeland slate to the roof.

Dufton Youth Hostel

The Y.H.A. brief for this former 1930ís family house was to improve the toilet and shower facilities, provide a new laundry and drying room and an additional bedroom and improved access to existing bedroom. The addition of a period fire place to the dining room and suitable colour scheme helped to restore the character of the hostel.

Ennerdale Youth Hostel

The Y.H.A. brief was for the upgrade of these two former forestry cottages at the end of Ennerdale Forest and on the Coast to Coast footpath. The brief was to provide both a better working layout for the hostel but also improved facilities. These improved facilities included a new warden and memberís kitchen, a new entrance porch and reception area and additional toilet and showers.

Ennerdale Youth Hostel produces its own electricity from a Hydro Electric Turbine so any new electrical fittings had to be kept to a minimum as the amount of supply was not high. Improved insulation to walls and in the roof along with new timber double glazed windows helps to reduce the heating bills.

Helmsley Youth Hostel

The Y.H.A. brief was to upgrade the accommodation, providing additional showers and toilet facilities, disabled accommodation and also improved access to the hostel. The construction of an extension to the existing dining room provides additional dining space as well as a lounge area complete with wood burning stove.

Yorkshire Ambulance Service - Halifax

Ian Pawson Limited provided architectural services to Abbey Construction Consultants Limited for the re-roof of the Ambulance Station at Halifax for Yorkshire Ambulance Station. The existing roof had come to the end of it's life span, and the new lightweight profiled steel sheet was the obvious answer. The works also incorporated the installation of an emergency bunded fuel tank for use by the Ambulance Service.
